The country’s leading wireless provider, Smart Communications, Inc. with the help of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) through the Philippine Navy (PN), expanded their cellular phone coverage in Caballo Island.
Aside from facilitating the arrival of the telco’s plane on the island, the PN gave abundant support in water transport. PN vessels worked out of Sangley Point in Cavite to ship Smart’s remote wireless equipment, portable power supply and specialized technical staff. In the wake of arriving on the island on the morning of 8 November, Smart finished the establishment of its initial batch of cellular phone signal repeaters on the afternoon of the same day.
Because the island is surrounded with sharp rocks and coral reef, only the PN is capable of safely landing the equipment and personnel on Caballo. Unauthorized civilians are not allowed to step on the island and the Philippine government is looking at the island as a possible quarantine area for the UN Peacekeepers arriving from Liberia. Liberia is one of the countries in West Africa that is currently facing an Ebola outbreak.
