“If it takes you 3 types of maintenance medication just to suppress the symptoms of your hypertension, can you say that you’re truly healthy?” This was the question asked by Dr. Rolando Balburias, a Senior Medical Consultant at LifeScience, to a 54-year-old participant, during the press conference about LifeScience on March 18 at Accra Law Tower.
His logic goes like this: should one spend P3000 a month for 3 different types of maintenance medication for the remainder of his life, estimating 30 years more, he is spending a minimum of a million pesos to his illness, and not trying to cure it. All these medications are just trying to do is suppressing the manifestation of the problem, which is high blood pressure.
He explained that deficiencies in just one of the following: Vitamin D, Protein, Magnesium, Omega 3 fatty acid, and sodium-potassium imbalance, may contribute to the elevation in one’s blood pressure. Therefore, deficiencies should be corrected directly instead of simply suppressing the symptoms.
“We don’t manage your disease, we manage your health. We try to reverse your disease,” he added. Their clients typically went through the conventional medicinal practice, or the 20th century medicine practice; where one is healthy, and then he starts having symptoms, gets diagnosed, is prescribed medicine, and gets side-effects from medicine, gets more disease, but it may extend your life. In this case, the listener is taking Norvasc as one of his medication, which causes many side-effects
LifeScience practices the approach called “Functional Medicine,” where they try to reverse your disease by finding out the root cause of the problem.
Take LifeScience’s ambassador, Mari Jasmine. She had problems with her health and her consultations with experts were going nowhere, until she ended up in LifeScience.
Compared to an average teen she had a very healthy lifestyle. Aside from having a healthy diet, she was also engaged in sports like swimming and soccer. She ended up tearing her ACL, a ligament on the knees, so she needed to get knee surgery done to her. After that she experienced being painfully bloated in her stomach, and started breaking out with acne.
After several years of experiencing the symptoms and having enough of the pain, she went to see two different doctors: a gastro anthropologist for her stomach, and an endormologist for her acne. Her gastro anthropologist explained that her bloated stomach and the pain she felt were symptoms of Irritable Bowel Movement or IBM, where you don’t really do anything to alleviate it. Her endormologist checked her hormones and said that she was “normal”.
“But I’m not normal, I don’t feel normal. I feel sick!” Mari Jasmine said “I was devastated, because even the specialists couldn’t help me.”
She felt as if the two things happening to her were connected, because she feels bloated at the same time she would break out. Out of pure desperation she Googled her symptoms, which is never good, but it did made her more aware of health. At that time, her friend Bianca, told her about LifeScience, specifically about the Food Intolerance Test.
She sat down and had the longest consultation with her doctor. She’d say all the past diseases and health related events she’s had. Her doctor, Dr. Beca, noted that she had knee surgery, stating that hospitals give a lot of doses of antibiotics which affects the microbiome. This was the first time that Mari Jasmine felt as if she was looked as a whole, and not one specific part, because normally when we get treated, we go to a specific doctor for each of the problems we were having. She then took the Food Intolerance Test where it showed that she was intolerant to a lot of things, specifically nuts. She followed the diet given to her, and after 6 months, her symptoms significantly improved.
It is said that the skin is the largest organ you have at about 2m2, but it is actually the gut, which starts from the mouth to the rectum, at 300m2. So when something is wrong with your stomach, you’ll feel it. Let’s compare our body to a car. In order for a car to run it needs water, oil, gas, air, and et cetera. If one of the components is suboptimum, your car may still run, maybe in not the best condition. But in the long run, the car will significantly take more damage, similar to our body.
The gut is also considered as our 2nd brain, because just like our brain, it has neurons and neuron transmitters, it is also called the Endemic Nervous System, and it has 70% of the body’s immune system. Therefore, if you have a leaky gut and it can’t absorb the nutrients properly, because it is damaged and leads to “intestinal permeability”, it will consider them as enemies. This is what happened to Mari Jasmine, which is why there was a lot of food she became intolerant to.
